SCULPTURE: "Apple Heads" FINISHED

"Man About Town"

"Stay Away From My Corn!"

"A Stroll In The Park"

Here are the "Apple Head Folks" all dried and painted (on DAY 15). I made the little bodies and hats out of Sculpy clay. I painted the apples more than the "traditional" craft would call for...I didn't soak the freshly carved apples in lemon juice right away on the first day, so they turned rather brown.
And, yes...the old lady is pretty creepy looking. Actually...they're ALL kind of creepy...I like 'em! Even though they took too long to dry for my attention span, it was a fun, weird little experiment.

SCULPTURE: "Apple Heads" pt.3

Here are my little Apple Folks on DAY 12...getting pretty close to the finished stage of dehydration.

I cut a few more slits in the center apple skin...just isn't drying out very fast. My original thoughts were that the apple skin might dry to look like fabric...like a hood around the old lady face. The wrinkles look kind of cool, but the dry-time is lots longer with the peel on.

The quarter in the shot will give you a sense of scale...the apples have shrunk quite a lot over the last dozen days. I'll give them a little more drying time, then I'll paint 'em and add some hair or something interesting for the finishing touches.

SCULPTURE: "Apple Heads" pt.2

Here are the "Apple Head Folks" on DAY 4. They're starting to mutate, but are still very soft.

I had to cut slices into the back of the green, unpeeled apple...it wasn't drying enough.

Hope they don't start getting moldy while drying. Stay tuned!

SCULPTURE: "Apple Heads"

On Saturday, Cat and I went to Lake Perry, near Lawrence, KS, for a fun day...it was gorgeous weather. Since I had such unexpectedly positive responses to my post of the "Beet Heads" I made, I decided to take my carving tools and try making some "Apple Head" folks. Keep in mind that this is "day 1"...these little guys will be shriveling up over the next few weeks. I'll post the progress as they dehydrate.

While I was carving, Cat said I had an "interesting bug" on my back..."it looks like a fly-fishing lure." As I was about to swat it, she said, "Don't kill it...you'll want to see this...it won't hurt you." I'm glad she got the photo of it...but, now that I see it up close, I"m wondering how she knew those huge tail spikes weren't just waiting to stab me and drain all the fluid out of my body.

Here are a couple of sketches I drew of the little cove where we had a nice relaxing time watching all the sailboats. We'll definitely go back again!
